Quarterly Firefox Update

  • Post a comment

Ok. Just taking a few minutes to make sure the team is all up on the latest and greatest firefox development goodness. Taking 5 minutes to catch up every 2 months or so is worth mucho money to the college every year, so I think it’s worth it. Productivity is never a bad thing, right?

Get Firefox

1. K. That said, first thing you MUST do is upgrade your version of Firefox to 2.

Why? Because it’s way faster, and version 2 includes auto upgrading of both the app and the themes and add-ons.

2. Firefox 2 has delicious bookmark integration, which lets you sync your bookmarks on all computers. If you use more than one, this is a lifesaver.

Download the Del.icio.us Bookmark Add-on

Not to mention, you have quick access to all of MY bookmarks too :-)

3. CSS Viewer is a new little css helper. Download it and try it out. It can be a little annoying depending on where you are on the page, but sometimes it’s a real time saver.

4. New version of the web developer toolbar available now! If you don’t have this, you’re wasting time. I promise.

5. ViewSourceWith lets you choose your text editor of choice to open the source code of any page in — ie. instead of “view source” opening a new window or tab, you could have it open in Dreamweaver…

6. Finally, FIREBUG. You’ve never seen anything like this before:

“FireBug lets you explore the far corners of the DOM by keyboard or mouse. All of the tools you need to poke, prod, and monitor your JavaScript, CSS, HTML and Ajax are brought together into one seamless experience, including a debugger, an error console, command line, and a variety of fun inspectors.”

Check out Firebug. You’ll thank me.

One more thing, if you still want to use Aardvark, you may think you’re out of luck with version 2 of firefox. Not so. If you download and install the Nightly Tester Tools, you can make all extensions compatible with the new version. Aardvark still works like a dream, they just haven’t updated the darned file yet. If you want to use Aardvark, and you really DO - trust me, install it before you upgrade to firefox 2 or it won’t install at all. (If you’ve already installed 2, get a copy of 1.5, install Aardvark on it and then open 2. They use the same preferences)

If you have any questions about any of this, let me know. Some of it is confusing, but worth every minute of the time and energy you spend tuning your browsing experience.
